Belin receives teaching honor

Former Youngstown resident Katie Belin was recently honored with the prestigious Sloan Award for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics. The award was presented Nov. 16 in The Great Hall at The Cooper Union in Manhattan.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, Belin was recognized as a top math teacher in New York City by the Fund for the City of New York and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The daughter of Rick and Anne Belin, she was born and raised in Youngstown and attended Lewiston-Porter High School.

Belin, who now resides in Astoria/Queens, received her undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Bard College. She teaches juniors and seniors at Fannie Lou Hammer Freedom High School in NYC, where she is credited with revamping geometry and algebra programs at the school and effectively working with students.
