Welcome to Grand Island sign updated

The town is saying both "Thanks" and "Welcome" with its updated signage at a main  gateway to the Island.

A new "Welcome to Grand Island, N.Y." sign that greets northbound drivers as they travel from the South Grand  Island Bridge is nearly complete with recognition of Island service clubs. The sign is located just before the roundabout at Staley Road and Grand Island Boulevard.

A disk with the logo of the American Legion Post No. 1346 was added this week, joining logos for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9249, Zonta International, Business and Professional Women USA, Rotary International, and Lions International.

The sign  was funded two years ago with $6,000 from the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the town's Economic Development Advisory Board, said town Councilman Gary Roesch, the Town Board's liaison to the EDAB.

The base has been in place, but Economic Development and the chamber went through and replaced all the aluminum supports, said Roesch. He called the sign an example of "another cooperative effort" between the chamber and Economic Development, one that recognizes "the service clubs that basically provide amenities to the residents of Grand Island."

The sign has one open space, for a disk representing the Grand Island Moose Lodge 180.

"And that's going to be replaced as well," Roesch said.

A similar welcome sign is located on the Island's north end near Kelly's Country Store on the east side of Grand Island Boulevard.
