Annual student art contest at ECDC

The 186th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal will be celebrated at the Discovery Center and the all-new Penney Gallery on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ECDC is located at 24 Church St., Lockport. Various events and entertainment will be showcased throughout the day.

The annual student art contests are accepting entries from all Niagara County students until Oct. 15. The sixth annual poster contest is open to students grades 9-12, the fourth annual art contest is open to students grades 6-8 and the fourth annual coloring contest is open to students grades K-2 and 3-5. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each age group at ECDC on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m.

Entry forms for the art contest are available at the History Center, ECDC, Market Street Art Center and all Niagara County schools. Entry forms can also be downloaded at NiagaraHistory.org.

All are welcome to take part in the events at ECDC on Oct. 29. Admission is free. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Chiavetta's will serve barbecue chicken dinners ($8.50 pre-sale or $9 at the event). Guests can take their food out or enjoy it at the Discovery Center in a tented area.

Tickets for the barbecue dinner can be purchased at the History Center, 215 Niagara St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or by calling 434-7433.

Additionally, the event will offer an Erie Canal music festival, titled "Relativity," from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, members of the History Center are welcome to attend a reception held in the Penney Gallery complete with cookie and punch at 1 p.m.
