The 53rd annual Special Kids Picnic, hosted by the Grand Island Lions Club, will take place Wednesday, June 20, at the Buffalo Launch Club from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The picnic is a Grand Island tradition recognized all across Western New York, in which the Grand Island Lions Club and numerous volunteers work together to organize an exciting day for more than 900 disabled children from the area.

"It's a fun-filled event that all the children look forward to," Annette Fahning, the new Lions Club president said. "It's especially good for them since they can't go to summer camp like other kids can."

Fahning, who has been a member of the Lions Club for 10 years, has been volunteering at the event for years, and has even offered her boat to take children on boat rides as part of the day's entertainment.

"It's wonderful to be able to do something for those who are challenged and struggling," she said.

Entertainment at the event will include the boat rides, an appearance made by Buffalo Sabres mascot "Sabretooth," musical acts, pony rides, face painting, clowns and magic shows. Children will even be able to tour one of the Grand Island Fire Department's fire trucks, as well as enjoy Shriner Kar rides.

Lunch will be served from 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and will consist of hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, and popcorn.

The Buffalo Launch club is located at 503 East River Road. For more information or to volunteer, contact Annette Boies-Lobl at 773-3530.
