The Wheatfield MUNY AA baseball team lost their quarterfinal matchup two games to one against Cheektowaga, ending their season in an exciting three-game series.

Wheatfield won the first game 11-4 behind a solid pitching performance by Ryan Layden and solid hitting by several players.  Mike Ranalli, Chris Prezioso, and Ryan Belton all had three hits, while Todd and Mike Brosius each contributed a pair as the locals jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and chased Cheektowaga's pitcher by the fourth inning.  Wheatfield got into trouble in the fifth as Cheektowaga put up four runs to cut the lead to 6-4, but Wheatfield fought back in the sixth to take a commanding lead, while Rick Hagerty pitched the final two innings to seal the win.

The second game was at Losson Park last Thursday and ended up being the most exciting of all three games.  Wheatfield once again jumped out to an early lead, taking a 3-0 advantage into the sixth inning.  Mike Ranalli pitched well holding Cheektowaga scoreless through five innings. In the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded, Cheektowaga hit a bases clearing double that tied the game going into the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Sam Prezioso singled, was sacrificed over, and hit in by Todd Brosius giving Wheatfield a 4-3 lead, going into the seventh needing only three outs to win the series. In the seventh, a leadoff walk and two fielding errors spelled disaster for the locals as Cheektowaga fought back to score twice taking a 5-4 lead.  Wheatfield couldn't muster anything in the bottom of the seventh.

Game three was played at Losson Field in Cheektowaga Sunday morning.  Wheatfield struggled to find any offense, as the game was tied 1-1 heading to the fourth inning. Cheektowaga finally found their bats at the right time and put up six runs in the fourth, leaving Wheatfield in a hole. The local team struggled to muster much offense as Cheektowaga won 9-2, ending Wheatfield's season. Chris Prezioso hit a 400-foot home run in the losing effort as Wheatfield ended up finishing the year 13-12.

Greater Niagara Mechanical and NFP & Sons Trucking/Excavation sponsor the team locally.
