The Wheatfield MUNY AA baseball team snuck into the playoffs, splitting a pair of games over the weekend.

On Sunday, Wheatfield grinded out a 4-0 victory over North Tonawanda behind two hits by Mike Ranalli.  Wheatfield grabbed a two-run lead in the third inning and never looked back in a sloppily played affair. Ranalli also closed out the game striking out three in two innings of work.

With the win on Sunday, Wheatfield needed a little help to avoid a three-way tie for the last playoff spot heading into the last day of the regular season.

Wheatfield lost to Magruder's (Lancaster) 8-1 Monday night in the regular season finale at Dawson Field in Lancaster. Magruder's chased Wheatfield's starting pitcher in the first, and the locals could not get the bats going as they finished the regular season 12-10.

Even with the loss, Wheatfield backed into the final playoff spot in the Buffalo MUNY AA Baseball League. Their first-round matchup will be against Cheektowaga. The three-game series will begin Monday night at Losson Field in Cheektowaga, with game two being played at Wheatfield's Fairmount Park Wednesday evening.

The team is sponsored locally by Greater Niagara Mechanical and NFP & Sons Trucking/Excavation.
