On Wednesday, the Lewiston Police Department identified the victim of a construction accident that took place Tuesday afternoon outside of St. Peter R.C. Church. Timothy Zayac, 56, of Lockport, died while working at the site.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning at Erie County Medical Center. Results will be forthcoming. The preliminary investigation indicates the death was accidental, however, an investigation is ongoing. There are no charges pending at this time.

At 1:59 p.m. on Tuesday, the LPD along with Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. - located just across the street - responded to a report of a man trapped on a lift at 140 N. Sixth St. Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was operating a lift in the eaves area of the building, and became pinned between the lift and the building.

As fire company personnel work to free him, he lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Firefighters were able to free him and immediately started CPR. MercyFlight responded and its personnel aided in life-saving efforts.

Zayac was declared deceased by a doctor at the scene.

Construction is underway to build an elevator connecting the church with St. Peter R.C. School. The goal is to provide access for handicapped and elderly parishioners. Work has been ongoing for much of the current school year.

Students were on Easter break and not at the school at the time of the accident.
