Nearly all the 408 schoolchildren at Sidway Elementary School were screened for eye problems in a free program conducted Monday by members of the Lions Club.

Lions, including Grand Island Lions Club member Tom Witkowski, took digital images of each student's eyes and presented the data to the school.

Patty Castellino, the school nurse at Sidway Elementary School, said of the 400 students at Sidway who were screened, approximately 30 were referred for follow-up attention.

"It went wonderfully," Castellino said of the screening. "I was so impressed. The kids did great."

Each screening took less than a minute for each child.

"For the first time for us at Sidway, it went very well," Castellino said.

Lions also screened children at a nursery school, who all passed said Witkowski.
