Spider-Man will make a special visit to Grand Island schools to help teach kids and their families that it can be fun to be active and choose healthy foods.

The super hero will be part of the district's second annual Health & Wellness Family Fair Tuesday, March 7, in the high school large cafeteria from 4-6:30 p.m. The many resources available for families that promote health and well-being within the community will be showcased.

"We've invited a variety of vendors to provide information, resources, screenings, demonstrations, healthy food and fun opportunities such as massages and recreational activities that will attract all ages coming to the event. Spiderman is just a fun draw for the younger ones, as is the face painting," said Cynthia Sharpe, RN, district nurse team leader and the health fair chair.

The fair is sponsored by the Grand Island District Health and Wellness Council.

"Our district has committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's health, well-being, and the ability to learn by fostering healthy eating and physical activity," said Sharpe. "The fair is also a requirement that is spelled out in the district's new health and wellness policy."

There will be free healthy snacks, fun activities, health screenings, free massages, information sharing from more than 25 local vendors, games, free raffles and a CPR demonstration. The high school pool will be open from 4:45-5:30 p.m. for a family swim.

The following vendors are participating: the Grand Island Fire Co., Erie County Sheriff's Domestic Violence Unit, Soma Cura Wellness Center, the Grand Island Lion's Club, Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, University Pediatric Dentistry, Island Kids, Erie County Department of Health, Poison Center of Upstate NY, Unyts, The MOG, Radisson Fitness Center, New York State Troopers, Just For Kids program, GI Parks and Recreation, GI Golden Age Center, the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Grand Island Soccer Club and Grand Island Little League.

Donations were received from Tops, GICSD Food Services and many of the vendors.
