SUNY Erie Community College's dental hygiene students will partner with Dr. Marti Peterson's Just 4 Me Pediatric dental team to provide free dental care to in-need children from Erie and Niagara County as part of the American Dental Association-sponsored Give Kids a Smile Day on Friday, Feb. 3 (8 a.m. to noon), at ECC's North Campus Dental Hygiene Clinic, 6205 Main St., Williamsville.

The ADA's nationally recognized day is a promoted dentistry initiative to bring disadvantaged children into dental offices for free treatment. It has provided oral health services to more than 5 million kids since 2003. Many have never been to a dentist before. But in partnership with Getzville's Just 4 Me dentistry and ECC alum Dr. Peterson (Class of 1995), the college's senior dental students will provide cleanings and information about dental care to a day's worth of new patients inside its North Campus facilities.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to use their extensive training to service our surrounding communities," said ECC President Jack Quinn, who plans to visit and observe his college's students at work.

ECC's dental hygiene students usually perform such free services for adults at their North Campus clinic. Through the fall and spring semesters, students apply classroom lessons about preventive care by assisting local patients with cleanings, x-rays and cancer screenings.

Those who know of a family with children ages 1 through 17 in need of a dental cleaning, X-rays or sealants can call ECC's dental hygiene offices at 716-851-1336 to make an appointment for Give Kids a Smile Day.
