Shop local on Small Business Saturday

At its Nov. 7 meeting, the Grand Island Town Board proclaimed Nov. 26 as Small Business Saturday on the Island.

In making the proclamation, the board noted that, according to the Unite States Small Business Administration, there are 28.8 million small businesses in the U.S., representing 99.7 percent of all businesses with employees in the country, that are responsible for 63 percent of net new jobs created over the past 20 years.

In addition, the proclamation stated:

•87 percent of consumers agree that small businesses contribute positively to the local community by supporting jobs and generating tax revenue;

•87 percent of consumers in the U.S. agree that small businesses are critical to the overall economic health of the U.S.;

•93 percent of consumers in the U.S. agree that it is important for people to support the small businesses that they value in the community;

•The Town of Grand Island supports local businesses that create jobs, boost the local economy and preserve neighborhoods.

The Town Board urged residents "to support local businesses that we value in our community by patronizing them on Small Business Saturday and repeatedly throughout the year."
