The National Fire Protection Association notes that most American homes have at least one smoke detector that can provide occupants with sufficient warning to escape life-threatening consequences during a fire emergency. To ensure that this safeguard works, NFPA 72 -- National Fire Alarm Code require smoke alarms to be replaced at least once every 10 years. Accordingly, "Don't wait, Check the Date! Replace Smoke Detectors Every 10 Years!" is this year's fire prevention theme.

Fire officials note that the public can be put at increased risk of smoke detector failure if expiration dates are exceeded and/or ignored. When in doubt, it is suggested that all users replace detectors during Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9 through 15.

Grand Island Fire Co. firefighting and EMS teams will visit Grand Island elementary schools on Oct. 11, 12, and 13 to offer fire safety tips. Sidway students will visit fire headquarters on Oct. 14 to gain first-hand knowledge of fire company operations.

The GIFC weekly program will wind up with an open house at fire headquarters from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.
