In an effort to boost blood donations during a time when they can be low, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt is partnering with the American Red Cross to sponsor a community blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, at Cornerstone Arena, 1 Grigg Lewis Way, Lockport.

With many holidays falling during the summer season, and many people away on vacation, this time of year is challenging for the Red Cross. The need for blood in New York and the entire country is significant.

Anyone who is healthy and 17 years of age or older is urged to donate. Donors must also weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. All blood types are needed. Accident victims, premature babies, people undergoing cancer treatment, organ recipients and many others rely on the generosity of blood donors.

Walk-ins are welcome, but to schedule a time to donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org. Photo ID is required.

Donors will receive a free Red Cross lunch tote and pizza.

Other partners for the community blood drive include City of Lockport Mayor Anne McCaffrey and Lockport Police Chief Mike Niethe.
