Family-owned business serves needs of area residents

Faery's Nursery & Landscaping in Ransomville is a little business that grew from primarily mowing lawns and tending existing yards to a place where many local residents and businesses rely on for decorating outdoor spaces.

After 50 years of service to the community, current owners Melissa Faery-Skorik and Dave Faery, children of founder Jack Faery, decided it was time to celebrate. So, next weekend, they are inviting former and current customers, as well as the general public, to stop by the business at 3170 Ridge Road. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 25, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, come in to see what is new in the gardening/landscaping world. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, country music radio station WYRK 106.5-FM will be on hand.

"We're going to have lots of sales, specials, free refreshments, and a few pictures out of the olden days," Faery-Skorik said.

Can't wait until next weekend? Stop by the Faery's booth at the Lewiston GardenFest this weekend. Find perennials, flowering shrubs, potted shade trees and some whimsical touches, such as wind chimes.

Look up while walking on Center Street. Faery's has provided the village's beautiful hanging baskets for the past several years.

Town of Lewiston resident Laura Frey, a Faery's customer for "many, many years," said she wouldn't hesitate to recommend the business to others. She calls on Faery's every year to help maintain the beauty of her yard and to clean her most recent landscaping addition, a small pond, behind her home on land that previously was flat and tended to be soggy. The pond boasts a waterfall and a little stream. It was designed so Frey could put in fish to leave year-round, water lilies and other water plants.

"It's wonderful, and I love it," Frey said. "It's very restful."

Assisting her in drawing up plans for and building the pond was Bruce Charboneau, a longtime Faery's landscape designer.

"He's worked here 25 years or more, so he might as well be family," Faery-Skorik said, explaining many of the business' employees have years of experience with Faery's.

Krissy Ferguson, for example, first started working at Faery's part time when she was studying landscape architecture at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University.

As a landscape designer, she meets with prospective clients to see what they have in mind for their yards, develops a design for their approval, and coordinates the employees doing the work. "Then, we usually work with the clients on how to take care of everything," she said.

It's nice to be employed by a family-owned business like Faery's, Ferguson said. "They treat their employees like family. We try to work with our customers and treat them like family, too."

Faery's has been doing a lot of landscape business lately with outdoor kitchens, fire pits and pondless waterfalls, along with the patios, fireplaces, walls and walkways it has installed for years. Today, an outdoor kitchen might include grills, sinks, fridges and even pizza ovens.

"Our season is so short; people want to be outside as much as possible," Ferguson explained. "There's really some neat stuff out there today -- we just put it all together."

Jack Faery started his business at the family farm just down the road, then moved it to its current location. In 2005, greenhouses were built.

"Our focus has always been on quality plants at reasonable prices," Faery-Skorik said.

In 2008, she bought the nursery portion of the business from her father, while her brother purchased the landscaping side.

"We started out hoeing in the fields and kind of worked our way up. It kept us out of trouble during summer vacations," she said with a chuckle. "No one ever told us that's what we needed to do (as a career). We just like what we did, so we kept doing it."
