The Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. today announced Niagara USA will host the Confédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive (aka International Confederation of Sport Fishing) for its annual congress in 2018. The Niagara USA meeting will be the first time in the organization's 65-year history that this congress will be hosted in the U.S., which beat out bids from Hungary, Tunisia and Ireland to make this an especially significant honor.

The International Confederation of Sport Fishing was founded in 1952 in Rome and is the governing body of international fishing tournaments around the world with more than 70 participating countries.

"CIPS leaders chose Niagara USA to host their 2018 congress not only because Niagara Falls is an internationally recognized destination, but also because we offer world-class fishing opportunities with a long list of freshwater fish available year-round," said John Percy, NTCC president and CEO. "We are thrilled to host this prestigious group and hope they will have an unforgettable time experiencing everything Niagara USA has to offer.

"I am extremely proud of the NTCC staff for working so diligently on this bid and am especially grateful to Gov. Andrew Cuomo who, as an avid fisherman himself, provided a letter of support towards our efforts."

Sean Warner, secretary of the U.S. Angling Confederation, said, "Winning the right to host the 39th International Sport Angling Congress represents a huge milestone for the United States Angling Confederation. It demonstrates the faith our international colleagues place in our efforts to advance sport fishing, conservation and youth fishing education across the United States and the world.

"It was important for us to engage the right partner for our congress bid; we needed to find a vibrant community that not only represented a desirable location for our international guests to visit, but also an area which was and is capable of demonstrating the many facets of sport angling within the United States. I'm convinced that featuring the Niagara Falls area as our selected venue was the key component in winning the 2018 congress bid."

The 2018 CIPS congress will take place in May and run for approximately three days. Planning for this event is currently underway and will include pre- and post-fishing FAM (familiarization) tours for all attendees.

The NTCC's mission is to expand the economic prosperity of the Niagara USA communities by generating individual and group visitation. For more information, visit niagara-usa.com.
