NT seeks volunteers for Canal Clean Sweep

Fri, Apr 15th 2016 08:55 pm

11th annual event set for April 23

The mayor's office and the North Tonawanda Waterfront Commission are seeking volunteer cleanup groups and individuals to meet at 9 a.m. at the large pavilion at Mayor's Park on Sweeney Street. Supplies, including rakes, gloves, and trash bags, will be provided to all volunteers by the North Tonawanda Recreation and Parks Department.

"This annual event has been a great success over the past couple of years," City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas said. "The volunteers have been instrumental each year in keeping our waterways clean and allowing activities along our canal corridor."

In a press release, Waterfront Commission Chairman Ed Smolinski stated, "This is a great way for our community to come together and spruce up the area, and feel good about your efforts after a job well done."

Sponsors of the event include HUNT Real Estate ERA Wheatfield Office, Walmart and the City of North Tonawanda mayor's office.

The City of North Tonawanda will take part in the event in recognition of Earth Day and in preparation for the upcoming 192st consecutive navigation season on the New York State Canal System. The city will also participate in conjunction with the New York State Canal Corp., Parks & Trails New York, and the various communities along the 524-mile canal system.

The Canal Clean Sweep highlights the growing significance of the canal system and the Canalway Trail System as a recreational and tourism destination across the state by encouraging communities, not-for-profit organizations and volunteers to engage in cleanup and beautification activities.

Last year, the City of North Tonawanda was one of 150 communities, not-for-profit organizations, civic groups, businesses and social clubs that took part in nearly 100 cleanup and beautification events along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail.
