Fri, Mar 25th 2016 09:55 am

Children and adults can uncover more "Hidden History" as the Niagara History Center's family night series explores "Titanic Connections to the Niagara Frontier," 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12.

Most people don't know there were several passengers on board the Titanic who had connections to the Niagara area. The program will explore these forgotten stories and offer activities to commemorate this historic and tragic event.

As families arrive for a pizza dinner, each adult and child will be given the identity of one of the Titanic passengers. Following a brief presentation, families will participate in hands-on projects to learn about the Titanic. At the end of the evening, participants will learn the fate of their passengers.

The family night series is funded through the Yahoo! Community Benefit Fund in conjunction with the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, which awarded the society a grant to offer the program on the first Tuesday of each month throughout the year.

The Niagara History Center is celebrating 2016 as "The Year of the Family" by emphasizing programs children and adults can enjoy together.

Each family night has a different theme relating to a little-known, unusual or mysterious aspect of Niagara County history. Family nights are most appropriate for children ages 5 and up, who must be accompanied by an adult.

Family night presenters include the history center staff, re-enactors, and volunteers, as well as representatives of local communities, New York State Parks, and historical sites and organizations.

Other sessions include: "Geographic Oddities," May 10; "Mysteries of Niagara Falls," June 14; "Military History," July 12; "Merry-Go-Round History," Aug. 9; "Native-American History," Sept. 13; "Ghosts," Oct. 11; "Underground Railroad," Nov. 8 and "Ghosts of Christmas Past," Dec. 13.

The family night program is open to all Western New York families. Reservations are required for all sessions. Call 716-434-7433 to make reservations.
