Offers vital training on disaster declarations, use of DLAN system, emergency orders

The Erie County Department of Emergency Services, in conjunction with the state departments of homeland security and emergency services, recently conducted two sessions of tier III emergency managers' certification trainings at the Erie County Fire Training Academy in Cheektowaga. Local elected officials, representatives from municipal highway departments and first responders from around Erie County were in attendance for interactive presentations on disaster declarations, emergency orders, use of the DLAN system, and resource allocation.

"The training is an opportunity for local, county and state partners to discuss the essential steps necessary to expedite the road to recovery following disasters," said Erie County Commissioner of Emergency Services Dan Neaverth Jr.

Neaverth was joined by Doug Winner, regional director of the New York Department of Homeland Security Division of Emergency Services and NYDHSES Regional Coordinator Nick MacVie as presenters at the training, which is part of the "NY Responds" initiative designed to strengthen baseline emergency management capabilities along with improving disaster response and recovery in New York.

"Keeping elected officials and first responders up-to-date on emergency procedure and response is crucial to protecting residents and is a necessary component of public service," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. "It's our responsibility to do all we can to provide a coordinated response to protect the people of Erie County, and I commend the officials who've taken the time to participate in the trainings and learn from the experienced professionals from county and state government."

Personnel from the towns of Alden, Akron, Colden, Evans, Concord, Newstead, Orchard Park, Tonawanda, Aurora and Cheektowaga participated in the training, as did their counterparts from the City of Buffalo and the villages of Angola, Springville, Alden, Akron, Orchard Park, Depew and Sloan.
