The Wound Center of Niagara - the area's only multispecialty comprehensive care center for chronic and non-healing wounds - didn't skip a beat Thursday as Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center officials celebrated the completion of a $588,000 expansion that doubled the facility's size.

"Providing care to all our patients is always our first priority, even on special days like this," said Program Director Aaron Wilson, BSN. "We maintained a full schedule today."

The center, located across the street from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, is jointly operated by the medical center and RestorixHealth, one of the nation's leaders in comprehensive wound care and wound management programs. The expanded center takes the place of one that opened in November 2013 and outgrew its capacity in just two years.

"We knew based on the size of the waiting list we had for patients that we needed to move quickly to meet the growing demand for this specialized care," said Memorial Vice President for Service Line Operations Sanjay Chadha.

Wound centers specialize in treating chronic or problem wounds - those that fail to respond to conventional treatment within 30 days. They are often associated with medical conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation and certain types of infection. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers are used to provide pressurized oxygen therapy that stimulates tissues and helps wounds heal more quickly.

The new center adds a third hyperbaric oxygen chamber and is designed to accommodate a fourth, Chadha said.

At The Wound Center of Niagara, comprehensive wound treatment is overseen by seven physician specialists from the fields of vascular surgery, infectious disease, general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, internal medicine, podiatry and family medicine. The multidisciplinary approach ensures patients are treated for the underlying conditions that can cause problem wounds as well as the wounds themselves.

It's an approach that has proven very successful, said Medical Director Michael Mitchell, M.D., FACS, a vascular surgeon.

"The Wound Center of Niagara's healing rate of 97 percent and average time for wounds to heal of 34 days are both much better than national benchmarks," Mitchell said. "The fact that we've achieved that while maintaining a patient satisfaction rating of 98 percent is a credit to the quality of care provided by our clinical team."
