The New York State Department of Health today awarded three grants totaling $4.9 million to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in support of a trio of community health care initiatives.

"These awards clearly demonstrate that we are on the right track as we continue our transformation journey to become a true community center for health and wellness," said Memorial President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo. "We are grateful for the confidence the state Department of Health is showing in our ongoing efforts."

The grants are:

•$1.93 million to support construction of the Golisano Center for Community Health. The new center, scheduled to open in May, will provide comprehensive integrated health care services, including services for adults with special needs and those who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center is named for businessman and philanthropist Tom Golisano, who donated $3.5 million toward the facility.

•$1.06 million in support of Memorial's Full Circle of Heart Care project. That initiative seeks to connect the broken circle of cardiac care in Niagara County by giving residents in-county access to cardiac catheterization diagnostic and treatment services, improving the management of cardiovascular disease in the community setting and preventing heart disease. Disease prevention efforts will include sustained public education in collaboration with community partners.

The provision of cardiac catheterization services is pending regulatory approval. Those services will be provided in partnership with Catholic Health System, Kaleida Health and Erie County Medical Center.

•$2 million in support of Memorial's Community Health Innovations for Niagara plan. This wide-ranging effort will incorporate existing health care innovations with new strategies to improve the health status of the Greater Niagara Region and enhance the patient care experience in a cost-effective manner. ("Better Health. Better Care. Less Cost.")

"These competitive grant awards demonstrate the critical importance of our ability to document results we have already achieved and those to be achieved going forward through our initiatives," Memorial Chief Operating Officer Sheila K. Kee said. "We know the state considers the importance of those results and we will work tirelessly to achieve our goals for these three programs."

Assemblyman John Ceretto said, "Providing our community with quality health care and state-of-the-art facilities continues to be a priority for us all. The state's award of $5 million to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will go a long way toward strengthening vital health care services and creating jobs in our community."

He added, "This important investment will help deliver on our commitment to expand services locally and ensure our sick and injured family members have access to the highest care possible."
