Something familiar blooming at Apple Granny

Winter isn't all bad.

In fact, patrons at Apple Granny Restaurant are hoping the cold spell lasts a little longer this year.

Why?

Two words.

"Awesome blossom."

That's right.

Back by popular demand is the restaurant's signature blooming onion.

"It was a mainstay on this menu for a number of years," owner Chuck Barber said. "It was removed ... about two years ago. It was taken off the menu.

"We've heard a lot of customer feedback asking us to bring it back in. So, we're bringing it back this winter for a trial run; see how it goes. And, hopefully, if people welcome it, and remember it, and like it, we'll add it back to the menu."

For those unfamiliar with the dish, "We get a nice, big Vidalia onion. And the guys back there fry it up nice, and they put a nice sauce in the middle of it," Barber said.

Diners will also notice mac-and-cheese is now available daily, and Apple Granny refreshed its bar, adding new drinks and IPAs.

But that's not all.

"We want to really encourage families to come in here," Barber said.

To that end, "On Tuesdays, kids eat free," he explained. "Any kids 12 and under are able to order anything off the kids menu, and that item is free. We ask for one paying adult for every three kids."

In other words, when mom and dad dine in, little Billy, Suzie, Jane, Tom, Adam and Brad all eat free.

Apple Granny Restaurant is located at 433 Center St., Lewiston.
