Powerball Players get more bang for their buck with Power Play option; an extra dollar allows winners to increase prize amounts

New Yorkers seeking their fortune in this Saturday's record-setting $800 million Powerball jackpot have an additional tool to get paid big bucks: Power Play.

Power Play allows a winner to potentially double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple the lower-tier prize amounts for just an additional dollar. The extra dollar also automatically boosts the second prize of matching all five numbers from $1 million to $2 million.

Emma Duvoll of the Bronx is just one lucky New Yorker to benefit from the Power Play option. Duvoll chose the Power Play option and matched the first five numbers drawn for the Feb. 1, 2014, Powerball drawing, earning her a $2,000,000 win.

"For just a dollar more, players have a new level of excitement when the drawing occurs," said Gardner Gurney, director of the Division of the Lottery. "While an $800 million jackpot is certainly unprecedented, Power Play gives the opportunity of turning $3 into $2 million or even $200, which is also a pretty neat trick."

The specific multiplier value is determined at random just before the actual Powerball drawing. For jackpots of $150 million or less, Power Play players could even get a 10-times multiplier. To get the multiplier, a player must choose the Power Play option when buying a Powerball ticket.
