Members of the Salvation Army, as well as local officials kicked off the Red Kettle Campaign at Budwey's Market in North Tonawanda on Oct. 6. The kick-off marks the beginning of the holiday season for the Salvation Army and its goal of raising $170,000 from the red kettles in various locations in North Tonawanda, Tonawanda and Grand Island during the Christmas season.

Each year around Christmas, the Salvation Army provides food and Christmas gifts for families and individuals in need in these communities. It also provides assistance year-round, including though its senior program and many programs for young people. The money raised by the Red Kettle Campaign is just one source of funds needed for the many services the organization provides.

North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas joined Majors Celestin and Stephanie Nkounkou of the Salvation Army, along with the Salvation Army band and members of the Tonawandas and Grand Island advisory boards for the kick-off.

Others who partook in the kick-off include New York State Sen. Robert G. Ortt, City of Tonawanda Mayor Rick Davis, Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana, Town of Grand Island Deputy Supervisor Gary Roesch, Dr. Jerry Barlow from the Rotary Club of Grand Island, and Phillip Gallson from the Rotary Club of the Tonawandas.
