'The Cat in the Hat' will visit Saturday story hour

The Friends of the Youngstown Free Library will host a fall book sale next weekend at the Youngtown Village Center gym, 240 Lockport St. The book sale will also feature a "Cat in the Hat"-themed story and craft time at 11 a.m. Saturday, when The Cat himself will visit with the children.

Book Sale

Current members and those wishing to join the Friends organization are invited to "Members Night" from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. The book sale is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. At 1 p.m. Saturday, the bag sale begins, when shoppers can fill a shopping bag (provided by staff) for $3.

The book sale is organized by Friends directors Faith Koch and Philip Miller and involves the support of dozens of volunteers who unpack, sort and organize the sale's materials.

As in the past, available items will include fiction, nonfiction, children's and adolescent, travel, cooking, gardening, self-help, spiritual and literature title, as well as New York Times best-sellers. DVDs and CDs also will be for sale.

Items cost between 25 cents and $3. The proceeds benefit the Youngstown Free Library.

Donations of used books and materials are welcome and can be dropped off during normal library hours.

Story Time Saturday

"We invite parents with elementary-age children to this special story and craft time to meet the Cat in the Hat," said Charlotte Clark, Friends president. "All children will be given a coupon for a free children's book at the sale, too."

Heidi Lauger from the Town of Porter story hour, Secretary of the Friends, will read aloud to the kids and provide an easy craft project during the 45-minute story time. The Cat in the Hat will then meet the children and be available for photos.
