Wound Center of Niagara expansion to begin

The Wound Center of Niagara at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will soon undergo an expansion that will see it double in size.

The $700,000 project, expected to begin later this month, is being undertaken to accommodate the growing number of patients seeking care there, said Michael Mitchell, M.D., the center's medical director.

"Our comprehensive approach to wound management has been very well received by both referring physicians and patients needing this specialized care," Mitchell said. "This expansion will allow us to better meet the growing demand."

Located across the street from Memorial Medical Center, the Wound Center of Niagara opened in November 2013 and provides complete wound care treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy under an agreement with RestorixHealth, a national leader in delivering comprehensive wound management with clinical excellence and superior patient outcomes.

Mitchell leads a team of seven specially trained physicians representing a half-dozen medical specialties. This approach ensures a breadth and depth of wound care expertise not found elsewhere in the area.

"Our multidisciplinary and aggressive approach to wound care gets results," said Program Director Aaron Wilson, BSN, who noted the center's average time for a patient's wound to heal is 32 days, just over half the national average.

The center currently operates two hyperbaric chambers. Its expansion will include the acquisition and installation of two additional chambers and the creation of two additional treatment rooms.
