Thruway Authority announces weekend closures of southbound North Grand Island bridge on Niagara Thruway (I-190)

Press release

Fri, Sep 25th 2015 01:40 pm

Closure to begin tonight at 10 p.m.

The Thruway Authority has announced the weekend closure of the southbound North Grand Island Bridge on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) for bridge surface rehabilitation. The closure begins Friday at 10 p.m. The bridge will remain closed through 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

All southbound traffic on the Niagara Thruway (I-190) will be shifted into a single lane on the northbound North Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic over the bridge and return traffic to its regular pattern.

Northbound motorists should expect significant delays between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and should seek alternate routes.

The weekend closure will mitigate the number of future nightly closures and lane shifts on the Niagara Thruway (I-190), therefore directly reducing traffic disruption and providing safer travel for motorists.

In case of inclement weather, work may be postponed.

The Thruway Authority appreciates motorists' patience and understanding while this improvement project takes place.
