Grand Island: 260 teams signed up for Gus Macker

The hoops for the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament have arrived on the Island in advance of the event, which will take place on Grand Island Boulevard. The baskets were delivered Sunday night after their use in the Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournament in Olean last weekend.

According to Corey McGowan, organizer of the Grand Island Macker tourney, 260 teams have registered to play in the event Aug. 29 and 30. At four players per team, 1,040 people will end up playing ball on 26 courts on Grand Island Boulevard and three more in the Grand Island Town Hall parking lot. The three parking-lot courts will utilize a special sports flooring for the men's and women's open division for the best players.

The Gus Macker 3-on-3 games will take place on Grand Island Boulevard between Whitehaven and Baseline roads on courts that are 35 feet by 35 feet in size.

"Hoops on the boulevard will just about stretch light to light," McGowan said.
