North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas has announced Jesse Gooch, proprietor of Painters Plus, selected the winner of the fifth annual Project H.O.P.E contest.

Michael O'Connor, a Vietnam veteran suffering from Agent Orange - a widower and cancer survivor - was selected from the entries submitted for the paint makeover.

Project HOPE, which stands for "Helping Others Paint Exteriors, was initiated by Gooch in 2011. O' Connor will have his home pressure-washed, primed and painted by the Painters Plus crew and volunteers.

Pappas, along with other city officials, will assist with the project. The painting event will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. More volunteers are needed to assist in this project.

When the contest was announced, the criteria for selecting a person or family were that they were either disabled, elderly, suffering financial hardships or a disabled veteran.

"There were several good entries submitted for the contest, and it was challenging to make the final decision," Gooch said.

"This is a great project that helps not only the homeowner, but the entire neighborhood. I want to commend Jesse Gooch and his team from Painters Plus for his volunteer efforts in giving back to our City," Pappas said.

Sherwin Williams, located on Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda, will provide the paint for Project HOPE. In addition, Good Guys Pizza will donate food and beverages for the volunteers.
