Obit: Lauri I. Katvala

Lauri I. Katvala of Greenville, Maine, formerly of Youngstown, was called home July 28, 2015. He was born in Concord, Massachusetts, in 1939, raised in Stow, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1957 from Hale High School.

Katvala served in the U.S. Army at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He graduated from Franklin Institute in Boston and from Buffalo State College. He worked at Great Lakes Carbon in Niagara Falls, and retired to his log cabin dream home in Greenville.

He was involved with the Lions Club in Youngstown. Katvala was an active leader with the Boy Scouts for 50 years, both with Youngstown's Troop 829 and as the founder in rebuilding Greenville's Troop 120.

Katvala enjoyed time spent in his canoe as a New York state adventure guide, was a greeter for military service personnel in Maine, and a member of the Kaleva Club of Maynard, Massachusetts, for 25 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lauri and Helen Katvala of Stow. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Beach), to whom he was married for nearly 50 years, and by his children: Eric, and wife Reyne of Morningside, Maryland; Heidi, of Richmond, Virginia; Mark, and wife, Megan, of Carthage; and Dawn, and husband Dan Ball of Newfane. His grandchildren include Samuel and Haylie Carter, Ethan and Logan Katvala and Aurora and Tallulah Ball.

Katvala is survived by his sister, Karen, and husband Clark Smith of Stow; brother-in-laws Tim Beach and wife, Peggy, of Niagara Falls; and Mike Beach and wife, Jude, of Portland, Oregon; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at 6672 Wheeler Road, Lockport.
