This weekend, Youngstown Lions Club members will man the parking lot outside Melloni's Food Market (200 Lockport St.) and the Rite Aid Pharmacy (214 Lockport St.) to raise funds as part of the annual Lions White Cane Days.

According to members John H. Mac Arthur and John Moore, who serve as co-chairs of the White Cane Days committee, this once-a-year event enlists the help of neighbors and friends in Youngstown to join the Lions in their goals of preserving good vision and, where good vision has been lost, help those who are vision-impaired or blind.

"White canes have come to symbolize the loss of vision," Mac Arthur said. "For the blind, the white cane is a means of maintaining mobility and independence."

Moore points out, "Money raised on July 11 and 12 will allow the Youngstown Lions Club to meet the pressing needs in our Youngstown community, including sight and conservation, scholarships and various community events such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Lighting Contest, Village Community Picnic, annual Summer Dance, etc."

Thanking residents in advance for their support, he added, "You are truly helping the Youngstown Lions Club make a difference in the Youngstown community."
