"UB on the Green," the University at Buffalo's free outdoor event series catering to the University Heights neighborhood, is back for its ninth season, once again celebrating Buffalo's summer with live music, dancing and hands-on activities for the entire family.

Hosted by UB's office of community relations, the family-friendly, alcohol-free celebrations will take place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays, July 22, 29 and Aug. 5, on the Hayes Hall lawn on the South Campus. Parking is available in the NFTA Park and Ride and Townsend lots.

Each night of live entertainment and engaging workshops carries a specific theme intended to bring the South Campus community and UB closer together. Themes acquaint the university's neighbors with different facets of UB, from wellness to athletics.

"It's great to have the series back for another year with much more community involvement in the planning," said Linwood Roberts, associate director of community relations. "It is sure to be one of the best-attended activity-filled events."

The festival opens July 22 with "Unity in the Community & Care Fair Night." This program is dedicated to unification of the campus and University Heights neighborhood, along with health and wellness. Free health screenings will be offered, along with fun activities and information about resources. Steel drum band Caribbean Extravaganza, and Kenny Hawkins All Star Band will perform.

"Unity in the Community & Care Fair Night" is supported by the University District Block Club Coalition, University Heights Collaborative and Bailey Avenue Business Association.

On July 29, "Arts and Culture Night" concentrates on interactive arts and crafts, offering stations for guests to explore their creative potential. The Dixieland and hot jazz-influenced Fredtown Stompers will perform.

"Athletics Night" wraps up the festival Aug. 5. Families can meet the UB Bulls and get ready for the upcoming fall sports season while enjoying a performance by Rumourz, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic food to enjoy the interactive activities and entertainment. Light refreshments also will be available for sale.
