Niagara University will soon be offering an undergraduate economics curriculum for students seeking to study the theory of business in the context of a broader liberal arts education.

The B.A. program in economics, beginning this fall, will qualify graduates for similar careers as the university's existing B.S. program in economics, but with a different underlying skill set.

"The B.A. program, by its nature, will focus more on the liberal arts and place a stronger emphasis on performing academic research at the undergraduate level, which can serve as a valuable option for students considering continuing their education in graduate school," said Dr. Daniel Tompkins, program director. "In an ever-changing world where technological advances change the environment in which we operate, a liberal arts degree that stresses critical thinking and quantitative methods can be of great value.

The program is being offered through the university's AACSB-accredited College of Business Administration.

Career paths for economics majors include work in business, financial institutions, government or public service, or graduate studies in business, economics or law.

The program is consistent with the Vincentian mission of Niagara University, which emphasizes service to the less fortunate. St. Vincent de Paul, as far back as the 1600s, recognized that, without wealth created from successful business endeavors, it is not possible to care for the poor.

Niagara University presently offers seven undergraduate majors (in addition to four management concentrations) within its College of Business Administration.
