The Grand Island Town Board joined the active-duty members of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Buffalo and the members of the Division 3-9th Eastern Region U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in urging all boaters and their passengers to wear proper-sized life jackets at all times while boating.

The board issued a proclamation at its meeting Monday and noted U.S. Coast Guard Sector Buffalo and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have declared the week of May 16 to 22 as Western New York Safe Boating Week.

In accepting the proclamation, the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary reminded all boaters that when it comes to life jackets, one size does not fit all, and each passenger should have a proper-sized life jacket and be wearing it while on board. The Town Board extended its "sincerest thanks to the members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary "for the outstanding work they perform improving the life safety on all of this area's waterways."
