Islanders were encouraged during Monday's Grand Island Town Board meeting to take the time this month to recognize older adults and the people who serve and support them.

May is Older Americans Month, and members of the Golden Age Club were present to lead the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the meeting. The board noted the club, established in 1959, has continuously "provided necessary services and stimulating opportunities, helping older adults take control of their safety and well-being.

The board called older Americans "powerful and vital individuals who greatly contribute to our community" during a proclamation presentation at the start of the board's monthly meeting.

In making the proclamation, the Town Board noted older Americans "possess certain knowledge, skill and experience, all of which are among our community's most valuable human resources."

According to the proclamation, the population of Grand Island includes 7,753 citizens age 50 and older, now representing 38 percent of the Island population, based on the 2010 census.
