The State Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing to delist Schreck's Scrapyard, 55 Schenck St., in North Tonawanda, from the Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Program/State Superfund Program.

The decision was made after determining the site "no longer presents a threat to public health or the environment" following excavation, treatment and off-site disposal of contaminated soils; decontamination of the former on-site buildings with subsequent demolition and removal; removal of buried drums and associated soils; and backfilling of all excavated areas to grade with appropriate materials.

The DEC report notes elevated levels of some metals are still present, so the site can only be used or developed by a commercial or industrial group and using groundwater without treatment first is not allowed.

Public comments are being received before the decision to remove the site from the registry is finalized. The public comment period will end May 31. Send comments by mail to Glenn May, Project Manager, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Environmental Remediation, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo NY 14203; email [email protected]; or call 716-851-7220.

A summary of any comments will be assembled and made available for viewing at the DEC Regional Office located at 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo.

If no new or additional information is received during the public comment period, DEC will delist the site on or after June 22.
