Final wireless carrier to join initiative; AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless already supporting it

The Erie County Department of Central Police Services has announced T-Mobile has joined the list of wireless carriers supporting "text to 9-1-1" in Erie County, and along with Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T, is now fully involved in the new initiative announced earlier this month by Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and Commissioner of Central Police Services John Glascott.

While traditional telephone calls to the system remain the preferred method of communication in an emergency, leaders said the alternative "texting" form of communication will be beneficial to individuals with speech or hearing impairments, as well as for use in situations where a telephone call is not possible such as when a crime is in progress or when the caller is facing domestic violence or abuse.
