Islamic studies expert Zeki Saritoprak, Ph.D., will examine the place of Jesus in the Quran and Hadith during a public lecture at Niagara University on Wednesday.

The presentation, titled "Islam's Jesus," takes place at 3 p.m. in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127. It is being organized by NU's department of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies.

"Dr. Saritoprak's talk will address the place of Jesus in Islamic theology and discuss how the image of Jesus in both Islam and Christianity can serve as a common ground and open a way for constructive dialogue," said Dr. Mustafa Gökçek, associate professor of history at NU.

Saritoprak has held the Nursi Chair in Islamic Studies at John Carroll University since 2003. He holds a Ph.D. in Islamic theology from the University of Marmara in Turkey. His dissertation, which examines the personification of evil in the Islamic tradition, is titled "The Antichrist (al-Dajjal) in Islamic Theology." It was published in Turkish in Istanbul in 1992.

Saritoprak is the author of more than 30 academic articles and encyclopedia entries on topics in Islam. He has served as guest editor for issues of the journals Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations and Muslim World. He is editor and co-translator of Fundamentals of Rumi's Thought: A Mevlevi Sufi Perspective and the editor of a critical edition of al-Sarakhsi's Sifat Ashrat al-Sa'a. His most recent book, "Islam's Jesus," was published by the University Press of Florida in 2014. He is currently preparing a book on Islamic spirituality tentatively titled "Islamic Spirituality: Theology and Practice for the Modern World."

Prior to joining John Carroll, Saritoprak held positions at Harran University in Turkey, Georgetown University, the Catholic University of America, and Berry College in Rome, Georgia. He is the founder and former president of the Rumi Forum for Interfaith Dialogue in Washington, D.C.
