$5,000 ASPCA grant is assisting with transport efforts

Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue will be present with adoptable dogs this Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Northtown Subaru, 3675 Sheridan Drive in Amherst. They'll take part in a special "Subaru Rescue Ride" adoption event.

Heart of Niagara is the proud recipient of a $5,000 grant, from the ASPCA and "Subaru Rescue Ride," which is assisting the rescue's shelter partners and transport partners with monetary support. This support is enabling the transport of dogs sitting in overcrowded shelters awaiting their forever homes.

Heart of Niagara Managing Director Kathy Nowakowski said,"Our shelter partners experience overcrowding and difficult conditions. While they are doing the best they can, they reach out to us constantly to choose animals for transport to our area. These animals are unable to be placed in their area, so we (move them to our area) where they stand a better chance to be adopted. This funding (helps) offset some of the costs associated with the transports, giving these beautiful animals a second chance.

"Heart of Niagara takes great care with a pre-approval process to make sure potential fosters and adoptive families are the right fit for the animals in our care. This grant (is enabling us) to do the job we are doing every day but, at the same time, helps our shelter partners by covering some of the expenses they incur in order to get the animals ready to come to us."

Northtown Subaru is hosting Heart of Niagara this Saturday and invites the public to stop by and meet these adoptable dogs. Heart of Niagara will bring Spike and Lolo (a bonded pair to be adopted together), Devers, Grigsby, Rita and Simon.

Donations of needed items including adult and puppy dog food (Purina, Purina One and Science Diet), treats, leashes, harnesses, KONGs, dog toys and bowls. Monetary donations, will be gratefully accepted.

Heart of Niagara board members and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the adoption process, fostering, volunteer opportunities, and provide information about upcoming events including the third annual "Heart to Heart" fundraiser, "A Taste of The Niagara Region."

Coffee and donuts will be available and have been donated through the generosity of Tim Hortons and Paula's Donuts.
