Community Missions has once again joined #GivingTuesday, a first-of-its-kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of more than 18,000 partners - charities, families, businesses and individuals - to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kickoff of the shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support, and help create a better world.

Taking place Dec. 2 - the Tuesday after Thanksgiving - #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

"#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to 'Black Friday' and 'Cyber Monday,' because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism," said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation.

Community Missions will once again give community members opportunities to volunteer and/or donate to its cause. Many projects will take place not only Dec. 2, but for the days following #GivingTuesday as well. These will include working in the community soup kitchen and clothes closet, decorating the mission, and wrapping presents for the upcoming holidays. In addition, several community groups will help to give the food pantry a makeover, to include painting its walls, replacing its flooring, and adding a mural to beautify the well-trafficked space.

Those interested in participating in #GivingTuesday at Community Missions can do so in a number of ways. Volunteer opportunities are available, and can be explored by calling 716-285-3403, or by visiting www.CommunityMissions.org/ volunteer. Donations, including clothing, household items, nonperishable foods and financial, can be dropped off at Community Missions, 1570 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls, or online at www.CommunityMissions.org/ donation.
