Last month, students in Ms. Khatib's and Mrs. Danahy's fourth- and fifth-grade multi-age classes at the Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center swept the shores of Lake Ontario for the Aquarium of Niagara's annual Beach Sweep. The class, along with students' families and friends, worked as a team to rid the beach of refuse and pollution.

Khatib said the event served as a coastline cleanup and way to catalog the litter and debris that gathers along the shores of our Great Lakes.

"It's part of the International Coastal Cleanup Day, which includes more than 90 countries and the estimated removal of 75 million pounds of trash around the world," she said.
