The Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission will celebrate its fourth annual "Feed the Falls" events again this Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Organizers anticipate delivering up to 1,800 traditional holiday dinners with all the trimmings to needy individuals, shut-ins and families throughout area neighborhoods.

Roughly 300 volunteers, including members from several Western New York area churches, are expected to help prepare and deliver these nutritious meals throughout the City of Niagara Falls - even extending to families in rural areas of Niagara County.

Last year, after suggestions from several volunteer families who enjoyed serving people on Thanksgiving Day, the Rescue Mission decided to add Christmas Day to its "Feed the Falls" program. As a result, more than 600 meals were delivered by volunteers to area homes Christmas morning.

Janet Scott, project coordinator, spoke of one family last year that came back from delivering meals very excited.

"They had made a Thanksgiving dinner delivery to an elderly woman and discovered that her Thanksgiving table had already been set with her best holiday decorations, but, sadly, just for one person," Scott said. "They felt very thankful, being privileged to spend time with her as they visited and had opportunity to pray with her. It truly brought joy and companionship to her lonely heart that day!"

Executive Director Shaun Smith said, "This is very common. We never know what we're going to find when our volunteers knock on that door. We need to remember that God calls His people to visit the needy, elderly and lonely, and to provide help, hope and healing for anyone in need. It's exactly what the mission is all about every day. This is truly a great way to connect God's people with those in great need."

Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission will open a special "Meal Hotline" and begin taking calls in early November.
