The New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have announced a public information meeting will be held to discuss the proposed rehabilitation/replacement of the American Falls Bridges, which connect Niagara Falls, Green Island and Goat Island within Niagara Falls State Park in the City of Niagara Falls. The meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Castellani and Governor's rooms at the Conference Center Niagara Falls, 101 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls. It runs from 5-8 p.m. with a formal presentation by DOT staff at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will present proposals to either repair or completely replace the bridges.

The existing pedestrian bridges were built in 1901 and have undergone various rehabilitations since that time, with the most notable being rehabilitation of the concrete arches when the flow over the American Falls was "shut off" in 1969. The deterioration of the arches required the installation of temporary truss bridges in 2004 to provide for the safe passage across both bridges.

Scoping for the bridge rehabilitation/replacement project was completed in the fall of 2013, and preliminary engineering and environmental review is underway. It is anticipated construction on the bridge will begin in the spring of 2017.

For further information, or to request a sign language interpreter or assistive listening system, contact Craig Mozrall, regional special projects manager, at 716-847-3033, or write to the New York State Department of Transportation, 100 Seneca St., Buffalo, NY 14203. Reference: "Project Identification Number 5760.40."

Members of the public who plan on attending the meeting should enter the Conference Center via the Third Street entrance.
