Six N-W grads receive booster scholarships

Ann D. Bishara, president of the Niagara-Wheatfield Community Boosters recently presented this year's six scholarships in memory of Alice Stradley, treasurer, who passed away Feb. 24.

The Community Boosters scholarships went to N-W Class of 2014 students: Joseph A. Corio Jr., Jaclyn Danvir, Kirsten Klettke, Katie Lazarou, Bailey Milleville and Ayman Mustafa.

Joseph A. Corio Jr., the son of Gina and Joseph Corio, was the National Honor Society president, Class of 2014 president, Symphonic Band president, stage crew manager, Jazz Band treasurer, and was named Scholar Athlete for soccer and tennis. He made the third team Niagara Frontier League tennis second doubles, All-County Jazz Band (for two years) and All-County Band (for four years). Corio participated on the junior varsity and varsity tennis teams and the junior varsity and varsity soccer teams (serving as captain one year).

Corio has coached children for PAL's Summer Soccer program for seven years, volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul parish for five years and for the Music Parents Club. He has tutored in all subjects as a volunteer.

Corio will attend the University at Buffalo and plans to pursue a career in environmental engineering.

Jaclyn Danvir, the daughter of Denise and Jeff Danvir, is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 42 of 320 students, with an average of 94.40. She is the Class of 2014 treasurer (11th and 12th grade) and received the New York State Comptroller's Award.

Danvir was the N-W Empire Girls representative in 2013, participated in junior varsity and varsity soccer and track teams, was a member of Yearbook Club and Donate Life Club. She has volunteered at a soup kitchen, and at holiday parties for the underprivileged, charity walks, runs and school charity games.

Danvir will attend Niagara University and plans to pursue a career in criminology and criminal justice.

Kirsten Klettke, the daughter of Kareen and Matthew Klettke, is a member of National Honor Society, ranking 15 of 320 and has an average of 96.39.

She participated in junior varsity and varsity basketball, serving as team captain, and junior varsity and varsity volleyball. She has participated in sports since fourth grade: soccer, cheerleading, volleyball and softball.

Klettke is an active member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church and its Youth Group. She has volunteered in multiple events at the church and Vacation Bible School. She is involved in fundraising for Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and the St. Johnsburg Volunteer Fire Co.

Klettke plans to attend SUNY Geneseo and wants to pursue a career in anthropology and biology.

Katie Lazarou, the daughter of Amie and Christopher Lazarou, was the vice president of the National Honor Society (2013-14), secretary of the Class of 2014, treasurer of DECA (2013-14), placed first in the DECA state competition (2014), participated in the DECA regional competition (2014), and was a member of Donate Life Club.

Lazarou participated in junior varsity track and junior varsity and varsity tennis (captain 2013). She went to varsity competition (2013) and placed third in NFL doubles competition, received Best Leader Award (2012-13) and Most Valuable Player (2013).

Lazarou plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology and to pursue a career in chemical engineering.

Bailey Milleville, the daughter of Lisa Britton and Scott Milleville, is a member of the National Honor Society, Business Honor Society and ranks 31 of 320 students with an average of 94.882. She has earned the Falcon Pride Award, Player of the Game Award, and Scholar Athlete Award. She served as Class of 2014 president (2010-11).

She also participated in varsity cheerleading (one year), basketball (three years), and softball (one year).

Milleville served as office assistant (2010-14), and was a member of the Outdoor Club (four years) and DECA (2013-14).

Milleville has volunteered at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, assisting patients (summer 2012 to present) and tutored middle school and high school students in various subjects.

Milleville has worked at Sawyer Creek Restaurant (2011 to present) and Nike Factory Outlet (2012 to present).

Milleville plans to attend Daemon College and wants to pursue a career as a physician's assistant.

Ayman Mustafa, the son of Iman and Ahmad Mustafa, is a member of the Honor Society and ranks 78 of 320 students with an average of 91.91. He was the president of the Class of 2014 (10th grade) and participated in cross country, track and field, swimming and diving team, plus helped in the Sabre Alumni game.

Mustafa was a member of the Newspaper Club, was a journalist for Section6runs.com, and participated in the musical "Shrek."

He was a tutor for N-W students and volunteered for the Niagara Falls Police Department translating for Arabic-speaking tourists needing help in navigating around the city.

Mustafa plans to attend Daemen College and wants to pursue a career in physical therapy.
