One of the significant advantages of living in Youngstown this season is the guided walking tours provided by the heritage tours and tourism committee. These tours enable participants to learn about local history right where it happened.

With three different tours offered, walkers can visit several areas of the historical village with a knowledgeable and passionate tour guide.

"The 'Heritage Walking Tours of Youngstown' are a fun way of bringing together local residents and tourists for an unforgettable historical experience," said Gretchen Duling, chairperson of the heritage committee.

Options include:

Tour A: Wednesday, July 30, 7-9 p.m.:Youngstown is best seen by foot with an outdoor walking adventure down "old" Main Street to Campbell Street. Ada Steele, owner of the El Dorado Hotel, will tell stories of her neighbors as tourgoers wander through the beautiful neighborhood and admire the historic 19th century homes on Main Street.

Karen Noonan, as Catherine Young, will be assisting.

Tour B: Saturday, Aug. 16, 7-9 p.m.:Youngstown's waterfront and underground railroad are the best-kept secrets of Youngstown. From the 17th to the 21st century, Youngstown's location at the mouth of the lower Niagara River affected its historical past.

Tour C: Saturday, Oct. 11, 6-8 p.m.:Guests who dare to take the "Youngstown Ghosts, Graveyard and Murders" tour will visit the "old burial ground." Hunt for ghosts and examine the evidence in the death of George C. Hotchkiss. The outdoor walking tour features haunted facts and folklore.

All tour groups meet at the Main Street kiosk in Falkner Park. Admission is free. Tours A and C will involve 1.5 miles of moderate walking, while tour B will involve walking down to the waterfront and back up to Main Street. By request, the village van can be made available.

For more information on how to register, call the Town of Porter Historical Society at 716-745-1271, email [email protected], or just come.

This new village tourism committee was formed after the successful Dec. 19 commemoration of the British capture of Fort Niagara and the burning of Youngstown. The committee is currently officially under the "wing" of the Town of Porter Historical Society, but functions independently.

Donations are gladly accepted.
