"My Town" headed here

Google Maps photographers are headed to the Village of Lewiston. They'll bring their "Street View" technology to the streets and businesses Thursday, July 10.

The "Street View Indoors" program has recently evolved to include "My Town," a project that creates a virtual walk down the main streets of small towns and cities across the U.S. Using the "Street View" imaging cameras, the Google team captures 360-degree panoramic images on the sidewalks in front of every business on both sides of the blocks.

While there is no charge for the outside storefront imagery to be included, businesses may opt to have Google cameras brought inside their stores for a nominal fee (register now, if interested).

Once the images are captured, the team creates a seamless, interactive, virtual "Main Street Tour," which becomes a part of Google Maps. A special copy of that is assembled into a standout webpage called "My Town."

Google recently took "My Town" to Cazenovia, Baldwinsville, Rochester, Buffalo, Schenectady, East Aurora, Ithaca and Hamilton. Nearly every town and city in upstate New York will be included this summer and early fall. The Google team plans to return to each town and city next year to update and expand these virtual experiences.

Jim Hilker, program designer and coordinator for the upstate New York Google team, encourages tourism and economic development advocates to link to and use the "My Town" virtual area to help drive business to local merchants.
