In Niagara County, there are approximately 470 registered sex offenders. By legislation, only 270 of the most serious offenders appear on the Niagara County Sheriff's website.

The website for the Niagara County Sheriff's Office is www.niagarasheriff.com. With the summer season upon us, Sheriff James R. Voutour is encouraging residents to review the website to see which of these offenders live in close proximity to you.

Citizens should click on the red link "Sex Offender Management" and follow the instructions to check their neighborhood and to sign up to receive email alerts. The website allows you to register for this confidential email alert service through the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and Offender Watch who will monitor your address thereby keeping you up to date of newly registered offenders.

The most beneficial aspect of the address-monitoring feature is that once you have registered an address, the system will automatically alert you in real-time via email when a sex offender moves within .25 to a two-mile radius of the registered home.

You can register any and all of the addresses where your family spends time; for example, a friend's house, grandparents or babysitter's address.

Also, be sure to check out the safety tips with many topics helping you and your family understand what you can do to stay safe.

Knowledge is power and knowing where the registered sex offenders reside in your area can help you make the best choice for a safe and enjoyable summer, according to Voutour.

For further information or questions on Offender Watch, call Deputy Joseph Flagler at 716-438-3314.
