New design will help minimize ice jam flooding

Congressman Brian Higgins welcomed the New York State Department of Transportation plans for a redesigned bridge in West Seneca. The existing Route 240 bridge over the Buffalo Creek currently includes five bridge piers and was potentially a contributing factor in severe flooding that poured into local neighborhoods earlier this year. Plans released this week indicate the new design will include only one pier.

"Extreme weather conditions left residents bailing out of their homes with devastating property damage," Higgins said. "We are hopeful that the DOT's forward-thinking design will provide relief for local neighborhoods for years to come."

In January, Higgins wrote to the NYSDOT commissioner requesting the department consider a new bridge with fewer piers to help mitigate the potential for future flooding into the community.

The bridge is slated for reconstruction next year, funded in large part with federal highway aid.
