There's a saying around Lewiston: "Come hungry to Syros."

The family restaurant doesn't skimp on breakfast servings. ... Or tables, for that matter. Subsequently, guests can get in, fill up fast, and get out.

"We try to feed them fast and good at the same time," owner and chef Bechara Cobti said.

"People always say they're happy (with) how big the portions are," said his son, Eli.

Syros serves breakfast all day, which is great, because, while most of us start our day with it, sometimes it's nice have it for dinner, too.

"When I used to take my kids out, they want to eat eggs after noon - for dinner, so I do it all day long," Cobti said.

Syros is family-budget-friendly. A table of four can eat breakfast for less than $40.

"It's reasonable with (the cost of) everything going up," Cobti said. "It won't break the bank."

Popular items: Syros offers a variety of eggs-and-meat dishes, omelets, Greek skillets and souvlaki. Weekend specials include eggs Benedict. Cobti said there are weekends when his restaurant goes through 100 pounds of pancakes and french toast.

Cobti has more than 30 years of cooking experience. He is meticulous about his potatoes, and he takes pride in his premium Black Angus meat, which he hand-cuts. Home fries are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Steaks are between eight and 10 ounces.

Chef's choice: Steak and poached eggs.

Writer's choice: Steak and scrambled eggs with a side of home fries. This king-sized protein plate is at its best when the steak and eggs are situated between slices of toast. That Syros sandwich is my Saturday go-to breakfast.

The dish is often listed as a daily special, which means it's about $1 cheaper.

The Greek skillet is a bold dish with lots of seasoning and layers of flavors. A bed of fried peppers, onions and tomatoes is covered with home fries and topped with scrambled eggs and feta cheese. It comes with beef, chicken or gyro meat.

Syros Restaurant is located at 869 Cayuga St., Lewiston. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. until close.
