Niagara University's longstanding commitment to community service will be recognized during Niagara Catholic High School's baccalaureate Mass tonight at 6 p.m.

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president, will accept the Deus, Domus, et Patria (God, Home and Country) Community Service Award on behalf of Niagara University from Judith Nolan Powell, chair of the Niagara Catholic board of trustees, and Ronald K. Buggs, president/principal at Niagara Catholic.

The annual award recognizes a community group for its commitment and service to the community at large.

The Mass, during which Maher will be the primary celebrant, will take place at the St. Vincent de Paul Parish, located on the St. Leo's site at 2748 Military Road in Niagara Falls.

"Niagara University, for years, has served as a shining example of what faith-based educational institutions aspire to be," Buggs said. "In light of the university's exemplary community outreach and newfound commitment to Niagara Catholic, we are delighted to present this award to Father Maher on behalf of the many young people who will benefit from our partnership."

On May 9, Niagara University, Niagara Catholic and the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo signed a formal memorandum of understanding, which detailed several collaborative initiatives among the institutions, including a Hospitality and Tourism Academy at Niagara Catholic.

Niagara Catholic students are also eligible to participate in NUSTEP, a dual enrollment program that allows them to concurrently complete Niagara University courses while they are still in high school. Students have the opportunity to complete up to 10 Niagara University courses and are able to enter NU with advanced/accelerated status through the Niagara University Prep Program.
