It's been a challenging undertaking, but stabilization and restoration efforts are underway for the historic Flight of Five locks in Lockport. On Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m., the Historical Association of Lewiston will offer a program about the three generations of Erie Canal development, and the resulting construction, demolition and restoration of three eras of Erie Canal locks designed to enable navigation over Niagara's indomitable escarpment.
David Kenyon, a Lockport resident, chair of the Erie Canal Flight of Five restoration project and member of the Lockport Canal task force, will outline how restoration of two of the five enlarged Erie Canal locks was funded, designed and constructed, as well as how this enhancement of Lockport's Erie Canal heritage will enable Lockport to attract a greater share of the heritage tourism market.
This 7 p.m. program is free and open to the public. It will take place at the Barton Hill Hotel, 100 Center St., Lewiston. Refreshments will be served.
